Keep Your Refrigerator Clean with These Tips

Buying a fridge and using it is not enough. In order for your fridge to have a long life, it is important to get maintenance done regularly. Cleaning your fridge on a regular basis is one of the most important steps in keeping your fridge in good condition.

We understand that cleaning the fridge is not your favourite chore, but trust us, regular cleaning will do wonders for the performance of your fridge. We are not here to just help you get your fridge cleaned, but will also slip in a few hidden secrets as well.

We understand that cleaning is frequently postponed for one reason or another, and that it can also be overwhelming. We are here with a super easy guide to fridge cleaning.

Before we get to the cleaning guide, let’s look into some regular practise you can have to save yourself the trouble of accumulating a bigger mess and cleaning it all at once.

Do not wait.

We know the job of cleaning is always put off to the next day or next week. We have all been there. However, fridge cleaning cannot be postponed. The longer you wait, the messier it will be and the longer it will take to clean your fridge. Also, for health reasons, since the fridge handles the food that you eat, it is advised to keep it clean.

Make it a routine.

Fridge cleaning takes a back seat in our chores because it is not on our regular schedule.

Every day you make coffee, clean kitchen counter tops, water your plants, because it is part of your daily routine and it doesn’t take much effort mentally to perform these chores. These chores are now part of your daily routine.

It doesn’t mean that you are supposed to clean your fridge as often as you water your plant. But having one a week or once every two weeks is enough.

Have the big “clean up” regularly.

People have a tendency to keep leftovers in the fridge for a long time. There are cut vegetables, cut fruits, and leftovers in the fridge, which can be kept in there for a long time, longer than it should. There is a limit to which your fridge can keep the leftovers fresh; after that, they will be spoiled.

Spoiled food in the fridge can be a build up zone for bacteria, which can be really bad for your health. It’s an unhygienic way of using your fridge.

Therefore, it is important to have a big “clean out” of your fridge, and throw away all the expired food and other items that have passed their “use-by-date.”

Here we have created a small guide on how to clean your fridge:

  • Step 1: Unplug everything first.
When it comes to cleaning your fridge, unplugging is the first thing to do. When you deep clean your fridge, it will be open for a long time. Therefore, it’s good practise to unplug the refrigerator to avoid wasting energy.
  • Step 2: Clean Out the Fridge
It’s a good habit to clean out your fridge of all the food before cleaning. So you don’t clean around food and leave spaces uncleaned. Remove everything inside your fridge, remove the shelves and do a deep cleaning.
  • Step 3: Use soap to clean it up.
Once the shelves are removed, wash them with warm soapy water. Once they are cleaned, set them aside to dry before putting them back in the fridge.
  • Step 4: Thoroughly clean the inside.
To clean the insides, use a multipurpose cleaner and a wiper. Wipe down every inch of the fridge. Another thing you can do is use a toothbrush to reach hard-to-reach spaces and crevices.

Put the shelves back up in the fridge and close the fridge. Clean the exterior of the fridge.

Additional tips

You can make a homemade cleaner with 1 cup of ammonia, 1/2 cup of vinegar, and 1/2 cup of baking soda by mixing them in a tub. You can put the solution in a spray bottle and sponge it on the wall of the fridge.

You can also use toothpaste to clean out the blots and stains on the insides of refrigerators. A plus point is that it leaves a fresh smell afterwards.

If there is an odour, you can have a quick fix with powdered vanilla or orange extract. And dip it in a cotton ball and put it in the fridge.

Keep the temperature of your fridge between 37 and 40 degrees. This is the optimum temperature to keep your vegetables and food fresh.

Hopefully, these tips will give you a better experience with your refrigerator cleaning.
